Your vehicle won't operate if the transmission goes out, so it is of vital importance that you keep your transmission properly maintained. Gillman Honda San Benito wants you to know that there are two major transmission types today, and each needs a little bit different type of maintenance.

Most vehicles on the road have an automatic transmission with gears that needs automatic transmission fluid to operate properly. This fluid gets worn down and dirty over time, and it needs to be replaced. Depending on the manufacturer's recommendation, automatic transmission fluid should be replaced every 50,000 to 150,000 miles.

The other major type of transmission on newer vehicles is a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This transmission works with a belt and pulley system and not gears. This transmission requires its own special fluid, and it must be changed more frequently than ATF fluid. Plan to change your CVT fluid every 25,000 to 50,000 miles.
